Nineteen year old Jacob Waters is a smart, healthy, good looking young man. So why can he not build healthy relationships? Why is it that he inflicts physical pain on himself relentlessly? What is holding him back from living a wholesome life? One word is the root of all of Jacobââ¬â¢s problems; porn. Since the age of thirteen Jacob has been addicted to online pornography. The physical and mental pain of his sexual frustration takes a toll on his life. When Jacob gained access to the internet in his room, he was able to enter a portal of adult content without supervision. Now he is paying the consequences, having to pay for therapy and make a slow recovery. One reason pornography is unhealthy is due t o how addictive it can be. It is scientifically proven that a porn addictââ¬â¢s brain works differently than a healthy non addicted brain. Britainââ¬â¢s Channel 4 television station did a short documentary on the effects of pornography on the human brain. They tested numerous people, addicts and non-addicts, on how their brains reacted to a pornographic footage. The participants in the study would come in, answer a survey of questions, and then watch the video in a brain scanning machine. A non-addictââ¬â¢s reward system, which is where the human brain transmits pleasure, would light up in the range between three and five on a scale of one to twelve. Whereas an addicts brain would light up between ten and twelve; proving the negative effects of porn. Victor Tomoto concluded that this shows that a porn addictââ¬â¢s reward system becomes uncontrollably hijacked and lights up like fireworks, while non porn addicts barely lights up, showing how they can control their reactio n (Timoto). The study proved how negatively porn effects the brain. Addicts lose the ability to control the reaction of pleasure their brain is rewarded when they view pornography.
